empowering people living with dementia and their communities through the arts
Flowers and
Friends
with Sir James Smith Community College and Camelford Memory Cafe
An Arts Lab project
Funded by FEAST, Headstart Kernow, Arts Well and Cornwall Council
2022
We worked with Year 9 pupils to produce collection 14 of The Photobook Project. The pupils set their themes: scenery, flowers and friends, nature and portraits, and an activity with each.
For the theme of flowers and friends, the class attended the local memory cafe, made flower arrangements and got to know the group. The result was an exhibition at the memory cafe and a set of books which are now kept in the foyer at the school for all to enjoy.

“I found it all quite moving. I realised I don't have any elderly relatives or even people I know who are from that generation left to talk to. I was worried I wouldn't know what to say, but in the end there were so many stories to tell that we ran out of time. The students were sharing their experiences on the walk back to school, they all enjoyed the afternoon too.”
